Stability and information are prominent topics of economic research. Unfortunately though, research concerning the influence of the information system on economic and social stability is scarce. In contrast, Chinese politics argue with the importance of social and economic stability to limit freedom in information flows. The article summarizes theoretical attempts in economic research to grasp questions concerning the relationship between stability, information, and economic performance, thus describing a new research programme. The central thesis is that analysing institutions and institutional change within the Chinese information system might be the best starting point to explain the impact of the information system on economic performance and stability.

China-related economic and business research constitutes a small but growing field of expertise outside China. The article discusses three key questions regarding the perspectives of economic and business research on China as an academic discipline in Germany. First, why is research on China's economy necessary and relevant? Second, how did the discipline emerge and develop? Third, what difficulties did and does the research focus face within German academic institutions? Against this background, the articles argues that a number of factors will most likely influence the future of the discipline: subsequent economic and political developments in China, Germany's cooperation with educational and research institutions in China, and the impact of digitalization on economic research in general.

Over the past three decades, China's fast economic development has induced considerable changes in China's university and research institution landscape, research financing and academic career incentives. This paper argues that these changes have affected the motivation and the ways in which Chinese scholars engage in international research cooperation. Most recently it has been observed that strong pressures on scholars and scientists - especially at leading academic institutions - to excel in international publications while simultaneously fulfilling their obligation to generate income for their institutions can lead to a dilemma with regard to international research cooperation: Those institutions and scholars most interesting for foreign scholars to cooperate with may be the ones with the least amount of both incentive and time to enter into serious cooperation. This article invites us to reflect on the implications of these changes in the incentive structure for cooperation in social science research on China. (JCCA/GIGA)

(Autorenreferat)

This success suggests that China could serve as a role model for other developing countries. The article argues that the essence of the Chinese success story lies not in the country's economic system or in specific reform instruments or measures. Instead, how political learning was organized to find solutions that suited China could be the major lesson to be learned by other countries." (author's abstract).
